SkillSelect does not ask you to upload supporting documents when you submit an Expression of Interest (EOI), but every claim in the EOI must be accurate and supportable. A skilled worker in the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman or Saudi Arabia should prepare evidence for qualifications, English, work history and partner points before relying on an indicative score.
What is an EOI?
An EOI tells the Department that you are interested in a points-tested skilled visa. It is not a visa application and does not guarantee an invitation. Home Affairs says an EOI can remain active for two years and may be updated before an invitation when relevant circumstances change.
The points shown in SkillSelect are indicative. If invited, you must be able to meet the points score stated on the invitation and satisfy the visa criteria.
Which evidence should I organise before submitting?
Prepare the evidence that supports each proposed claim:
- A suitable skills assessment for the nominated occupation.
- Official English test results that meet the relevant points category and remain valid.
- Qualification certificates and transcripts.
- Employment references with dates, duties, hours and salary, plus pay records.
- Partner or family evidence if you are claiming points based on a partner.
- Documents showing name changes or differences across records.
For Gulf-based employment, check that the job letter describes actual duties and that salary records, contracts and dates agree. A points calculation is only as strong as the evidence behind it.
When can I update my EOI?
Home Affairs allows an EOI to be updated before an invitation. Examples include new work experience, a higher qualification, improved English, a new skills assessment or a change in family structure. You cannot update the EOI after an invitation is issued. Review the current SkillSelect instructions before making a change.
Do not wait for the invitation to discover that a claim cannot be proven. The invitation period is limited, and Home Affairs states that an invited applicant has 60 calendar days to apply.
Use the waiting period to keep the claim defensible
An Expression of Interest is not a visa application, and submitting one does not reserve an invitation or make a points claim true. Home Affairs says an EOI remains active for two years and may be updated before an invitation; after invitation, the applicant cannot edit the invited claims. If invited, the person generally has 60 days to lodge the visa application. Use the wait to keep work references, English results, partner evidence and identity details current. If a new qualification or work period changes the score, check whether the relevant rules allow the claim and keep evidence before updating SkillSelect. Never inflate points to try to reach a likely cut-off. The documents should support the score at the relevant invitation date, not just at the time of visa lodgement.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to upload documents when I create an EOI?
The Department says you do not upload documents at the EOI stage. You still need to keep accurate supporting evidence and may need to provide it with a visa application after invitation.
How long does an EOI stay active?
Home Affairs says an EOI remains active in SkillSelect for two years from submission. Keep it current and check the live system.
Can I claim points for a document I expect to receive later?
Do not claim points unless the relevant criteria and timing rules allow it and you can substantiate the claim. Check the points table and seek case-specific advice if the evidence is incomplete.
Before entering a score, compare every claim with the Department's current points rules.
