A finance or accounting job in the Gulf does not automatically qualify someone for an Australian migration occupation. If CPA Australia is the designated assessing authority for the occupation you are considering, its assessment may examine degree comparability, relevant accounting competencies, English-language evidence and, if requested, skilled employment.
Which occupations does CPA Australia assess?
CPA Australia lists occupations such as Accountant (General), Management Accountant, Taxation Accountant, External Auditor, Corporate Treasurer and Finance Manager. The correct authority depends on the exact ANZSCO occupation and visa list. Confirm the occupation and assessing authority before paying for an assessment.
An applicant based in Dubai, Doha, Kuwait City, Manama or Riyadh can have their documents assessed from overseas; Gulf residence does not change the authority's academic criteria.
What can the assessment involve?
CPA Australia's qualification assessment considers whether the overseas degree is comparable to at least an Australian bachelor's degree and whether the study covers the mandatory competencies for the nominated occupation. The authority may require official certificates, transcripts, English evidence or detailed subject information.
A skilled employment assessment is separate and generally requires a suitable qualification assessment first. CPA Australia says it assesses overseas and Australian work, but it will not count employment before the degree was awarded and requires the work to be paid and closely related to the nominated occupation.
How should you prepare documents from the Gulf?
- Obtain official degree certificates and full transcripts.
- Check whether your documents must be sent directly by the institution or credential platform.
- Arrange an English translation where the original record is not in English and follow CPA Australia's specific translation instructions.
- Keep employment references and evidence of paid work separate from academic evidence.
- Explain any name variation across passport, degree, professional membership and employer records.
Do not assume a general migration document checklist is enough. The assessing authority's portal may require specific document formats or verification steps.
Check the authority and subject coverage early
Start with the nominated occupation and the assessing authority listed for it, then compare your transcript subjects with the current competency requirements. A degree title such as accounting, finance or commerce does not by itself show that every required subject has been completed. CPA Australia’s migration assessment has document and identity requirements, so prepare the original qualification records, transcripts and any requested course descriptions in the format the authority accepts. For overseas employment, keep letters and payment records that can verify dates and duties; do not assume that a job title or professional membership replaces the assessment. If further study is needed, check the exact gap before enrolling in a course. A positive skills assessment and a visa points claim are separate decisions, and Home Affairs still applies the selected visa criteria.
Frequently asked questions
Does CPA Australia award migration points?
No. CPA Australia assesses the qualification and employment against its criteria. Home Affairs determines visa eligibility and points.
Does UAE or GCC work experience count?
It may be assessed if it meets CPA Australia's current requirements for the selected occupation and is supported by genuine evidence. Work location by itself neither qualifies nor disqualifies a period.
Should I complete the skills assessment before submitting an EOI?
Home Affairs generally requires the relevant skills assessment for a points-tested skilled visa. Check the current visa rules and ensure your outcome is the correct assessment type for that visa.
The authority's current website should control the document list, assessment fees and timing.
