Working in migration practice

What working in Australian migration practice actually involves

Migration practice is a regulated profession where the work is mostly judgement under time pressure: reading a decision record correctly, telling a client something they do not want to hear, and getting evidence right the first time. It suits people who are precise, comfortable with detail, and able to be honest with someone whose plans depend on your answer.

What a career here costs you

In time and standards, rather than in money.

Cost itemWhat to expectWhy it mattersNotes
Registration and continuing studyOngoingThroughoutRegistration obligations and continuing professional development.
Learning the system properlyFirst yearIntensiveThe volume of criteria and change is the steepest part.
AccountabilityConstantEvery fileWork is done under a regulator and a Code of Conduct.

What you get backReal outcomesFor clientsFew roles produce such concrete results for the people you help.

Indicative only. Role requirements are set out in each position.

Fit test

Whether this work suits you

It suits a narrower range of people than most roles, and that is worth saying plainly.

You will like it if

  • You are precise, and details bother you when they are wrong.
  • You can tell someone something they do not want to hear, clearly.
  • You like work where the outcome is concrete and verifiable.
  • You are comfortable being accountable to a regulator.
  • You want to keep learning, because the rules never stop moving.

It will frustrate you if

  • You want a role where the rules stay still.
  • You dislike chasing documents and details across time zones.
  • You find it hard to deliver unwelcome news.
  • You prefer work with no external accountability.
  • You want to avoid registration or continuing study obligations.

Failure modes

What goes wrong in this profession

The same failure modes that affect clients affect the people advising them.

Overconfidence on unfamiliar criteria

High impact

The system is large, and confident guesses are worse than honest uncertainty.

Fix: Verify against the official source before advising anything specific.

Telling clients what they want to hear

High impact

It is easier in the moment and far worse later.

Fix: Name the weakest part of the case first, every time.

Letting deadlines drift

High impact

Requests and review periods are strict and rarely extendable.

Fix: Diary every deadline the day it appears, and work backwards from it.

Treating evidence as a formality

Moderate

Most refusals are evidence failures, not legal ones.

Fix: Read evidence against the criteria rather than against a checklist.

Working outside competence

Moderate

Registration carries an obligation to act within your competence.

Fix: Escalate or decline rather than advise on something unfamiliar.

Stopping learning

Moderate

Criteria and policy move continuously, and stale knowledge misleads.

Fix: Treat continuing study as part of the job, not an obligation to discharge.

Straight answers

Careers questions

Short answers to the questions people ask before applying.

Do I need to be a registered migration agent to apply?

It depends on the role. Advising on migration matters requires registration, while case and documentation roles can be a route into it. Each position sets out what it requires.

What does the hiring process involve?

An application review, a first conversation, a practical exercise based on a realistic scenario, and a conversation with the team. We aim to give a clear answer either way.

Is remote work possible?

Some roles are, and some are not. It is set out in each position, and we would rather be straight about it early.

What is the hardest part of the job?

Telling someone clearly that their case is weaker than they hoped, and doing it early enough that they can still act on it.

How much does the role change over time?

Constantly. Rules, lists and criteria move continuously, which is why continuing study is part of the work rather than an addition to it.

What makes an application stand out?

Precision and clear writing. An application that demonstrates care with detail tells us more than one that lists qualifications.

After grant

Once you join

The first months are about standards rather than speed.

Learn the standards

How we assess, document and advise, before working independently.

Work under supervision

Files reviewed until the judgement is consistent.

Keep studying

Continuing professional development is part of the role.

Own your files

Named responsibility, with the support to ask early.

Give feedback upward

The process improves when the people doing it say what is broken.

Current settings

What changes in the profession

The regulatory frame around migration advice is not static.

Registration requirements
Who must be registered to give migration assistance has changed over time.
Code of Conduct
The obligations on registered agents have been revised.
Continuing professional development
Requirements are set and revised by the regulator.
Enforcement activity
Regulators periodically publish outcomes against non-compliant operators.
Practice expectations
What clients must be told, and when, continues to be tightened.

Confirm current registration requirements with the regulator directly.

How to judge this page

What you should expect from us

Indexes are only useful if they help you decide, not just list.

A route to a decision

Which service fits the situation you are actually in.

Honest sequencing

What has to happen first, and what simply has to wait.

Costs stated up front

What is fixed, what is variable, and what is avoidable.

No pressure to buy the wrong thing

Sometimes the answer is that you do not need us yet.

Figures move with policy and indexation. A registered agent will confirm each one against the current Department schedule before you commit to a pathway or a payment.
