You only need to provide biometrics for an Australian visa if the Department of Home Affairs asks you to do so. Read the request letter first: eligible applicants may be able to use the Australian Immi App, while others must book an in-person appointment at an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre (ABCC). A VFS visit is an identity-collection step, not a visa interview or decision.
Can I provide Australian visa biometrics through the Immi App?
The Department currently lists the Australian Immi App as available in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, among other countries. You can use it only if the biometrics letter says your Visa Lodgement Number begins with AUI and you meet the app's passport and device requirements. If the number does not begin with AUI, the Department says you must attend an ABCC.
The app and location list can change. Follow the instructions in your own letter rather than assuming an earlier applicant's method will apply to you.
Which GCC cities have Australian Biometrics Collection Centres?
The Department's published list dated March 2026 includes these Gulf locations:
- United Arab Emirates: Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
- Qatar: Doha.
- Kuwait: Kuwait City.
- Bahrain: Manama.
- Oman: Muscat.
- Saudi Arabia: Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar.
Check the live Department and VFS pages before travelling. Centre locations, hours, appointment rules and service fees can change. If your city is not listed or appointments are unavailable, the Department may require you to use another location.
What should I bring to a biometrics appointment?
Follow your appointment letter and the centre's current instructions. Home Affairs says to bring the valid travel document linked to your application. The centre generally needs to scan your fingerprints and take a facial image. If you have a temporary injury, hand decoration or another issue that may affect fingerprints, contact the service provider before the appointment and use the instructions in your letter.
Does VFS decide my visa?
No. VFS collects biometrics and may provide related administrative services under contract. It does not decide a visa application and does not provide advice about whether a visa will be granted. Use ImmiAccount for application status and Home Affairs for visa questions.
Prepare for the biometrics appointment
Wait for the Department’s instruction letter before booking or travelling to a collection centre. The letter tells you whether biometrics are required and gives a deadline and reference details. The availability and appointment process at an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre can change, so use the official centre information and your instruction letter rather than an old social-media post. Bring the requested letter and the same passport used in the visa application; check spelling and date of birth before leaving. A collection service fee may apply separately from the visa charge. Some applicants may be eligible to use the Australian Immi App instead, but the app route requires the Department’s request letter and an eligible AUI Visa Lodgement Number. Do not assume that every applicant or every GCC location can use the app.
Frequently asked questions
Do all Australian visa applicants in Dubai need biometrics?
No. The Department will tell you if biometrics are required. Do not book an appointment unless your letter or the current official instructions tell you to.
Can an applicant in Abu Dhabi use the Immi App?
Possibly, if the Department lists the app for the applicant's country and the letter contains an eligible AUI number. Follow the letter's exact instruction.
Is a biometrics appointment the same as lodging a visa application?
No. The visa application is lodged through the channel specified for that visa. Biometrics are a separate identity check requested for some applicants.
