What is the Global Talent and National Innovation visa (subclass 858) and who is it designed for?

Direct answer

The subclass 858 visa is a permanent residence pathway for people with an internationally recognised record of exceptional achievement who can contribute to Australia's innovation and research capability.

The useful starting point isn't which visa is easiest to get - it's what this one is designed to do. It suits internationally recognised professionals, researchers, entrepreneurs and creatives whose record of achievement is genuinely distinctive in their field.

That purpose drives the rest of the journey - the evidence you'll gather, the conditions on the grant, where you can live and work, and whether a further application will be needed down the track.

Subclass 858 is a permanent visa pathway for people with an internationally recognised record of exceptional achievement who can contribute to Australia.

If it's granted, here's what you actually get: permanent residence once granted, giving access to Medicare, the right to work for any employer and a pathway to citizenship.

Key points

  • Subclass and permanence: 858 / Permanent residence
  • Sponsorship position: Nomination or invitation based
  • Outcome: Permanent residence once granted, giving access to Medicare, the right to work for any employer and a pathway to citizenship.

What are the eligibility requirements for the Global Talent and National Innovation visa (subclass 858)?

Direct answer

You'll need to demonstrate an internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement in a target sector, show that you would be an asset to Australia in your field and have the capacity to find employment or establish a business in Australia, or otherwise contribute to your field.

These aren't weighted against each other. Each requirement stands alone, so clearing four out of five still leaves the application short.

  • Demonstrate an internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement in a target sector
  • Show that you would be an asset to Australia in your field
  • Have the capacity to find employment or establish a business in Australia, or otherwise contribute to your field
  • Be nominated or invited through the current process applying to the program
  • Meet a functional level of English or pay the applicable second instalment charge instead
  • Meet health and character requirements for all applicants

Understand the current nomination or invitation process and prepare a focused expression of interest before relying on the pathway.

Because failing a single gate makes the rest irrelevant, an early and honest assessment is worth more than a polished application built on an assumption that turns out to be wrong. Check the constraint you can least influence first.

Key points

  • Demonstrate an internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement in a target sector
  • Show that you would be an asset to Australia in your field
  • Have the capacity to find employment or establish a business in Australia, or otherwise contribute to your field
  • Be nominated or invited through the current process applying to the program

Which documents and evidence support a Global Talent and National Innovation visa (subclass 858) application?

Direct answer

A complete application typically requires awards, prizes and formal recognition at national or international level, evidence of senior or leading roles, including position descriptions and organisational context and publications, patents, citations and research impact metrics where relevant.

A decision maker can only assess what your file actually shows, which is why documentation is where applications are won or lost. For this visa you'll generally need:

  • Awards, prizes and formal recognition at national or international level
  • Evidence of senior or leading roles, including position descriptions and organisational context
  • Publications, patents, citations and research impact metrics where relevant
  • Media coverage, industry profiles and evidence of peer recognition
  • Salary and remuneration evidence showing a high earning level in your field
  • Commercial outcomes, funding rounds or revenue evidence for entrepreneurs
  • Reference letters from recognised authorities in your field
  • A structured statement connecting your achievement to your intended contribution in Australia

Awards, publications, media, patents, commercial impact, salary evidence and references should be connected into one persuasive narrative.

Aim for coherence rather than volume. Names need to match across every document, dates need to line up between payslips, references and forms, and any translation needs certification from an approved provider. A compact file telling one consistent story beats a thick one full of contradictions - and it's far less likely to trigger a request for further information, which is the most common cause of a longer wait.

Key points

  • Awards, prizes and formal recognition at national or international level
  • Evidence of senior or leading roles, including position descriptions and organisational context
  • Publications, patents, citations and research impact metrics where relevant
  • Media coverage, industry profiles and evidence of peer recognition

How much does the Global Talent and National Innovation visa (subclass 858) cost in total?

Direct answer

The government charge for subclass 858 is high, broadly comparable to the skilled permanent residence visas, with the primary applicant charge at AUD 6,235 (from 1 July 2026) and lower charges for secondary applicants.

The government charge for subclass 858 is high, broadly comparable to the skilled permanent residence visas, with the primary applicant charge at AUD 6,235 (from 1 July 2026) and lower charges for secondary applicants. There is also a substantial additional charge if you do not meet the functional English requirement and need to pay the second instalment instead. On top of the government charge, plan for document preparation, certified translations, professional referee coordination and, in many cases, specialist advice on how to frame the achievement narrative - which for this visa is genuinely more important than for a points-tested application.

It helps to separate the fixed from the variable. Government charges are published and non-negotiable, and they change when the Department decides. Supporting costs vary with your situation and your decisions, and that's the part people routinely underestimate.

The reliable approach is a line-by-line budget: government charge, per-applicant charges, testing, medicals, clearances, translations and professional fees. Then add a contingency. Multi-stage pathways should be costed as a whole rather than stage by stage, because the second instalment is often the larger one.

Charges are indexed and revised, so treat every figure here as a planning guide and confirm the current schedule with the Department of Home Affairs before you pay anything.

Key points

  • Government charges are fixed, published and indexed - confirm the current schedule
  • Supporting costs vary with circumstances and are frequently underestimated
  • Multi-stage pathways should be budgeted in total, not per stage
  • Allow a contingency for repeated tests and additional clearances

How long does the Global Talent and National Innovation visa (subclass 858) take to process, and what affects the timeline?

Direct answer

This is an invitation-led pathway, so the timeline has two distinct phases.

This is an invitation-led pathway, so the timeline has two distinct phases. The first is the expression of interest and nomination or invitation phase, which depends on the program settings and how clearly your record matches the target sectors. The second is the visa application itself, which typically moves faster than a points-tested application once an invitation has been issued, because the hardest assessment - whether your achievement is distinctive enough - has effectively already been made. The practical implication is that most of your preparation effort should go into the first phase, and the quality of the evidence there determines everything that follows.

There are two timelines running in parallel, and separating them is what makes planning realistic. Preparation time is the one you control: evidence, skills assessment, English testing, clearances, a complete file. Assessment time is the one you don't - it moves with application volume, the checks your case requires and where the Department has decided to focus.

Processing depends on invitation, application completeness, evidence quality and Department priorities. A strong case still needs realistic planning around the current program.

Where you can influence the outcome is at the front end. Lodging a complete file, answering requests quickly and timing medicals and clearances so they don't expire mid-assessment all shorten the wait. Where a program is capped, the queue reflects planning levels rather than your paperwork - so plan interim arrangements rather than waiting to make them.

Published times are historical medians rather than promises, so check the Department's current estimate for your subclass before you plan around a date.

Key points

  • Preparation time is controllable; assessment time is not
  • Complete evidence at lodgement is the main lever you hold
  • Time medicals and clearances so they do not expire before decision
  • Capped and queued pathways are driven by planning levels, not workload

How do you apply for the Global Talent and National Innovation visa (subclass 858) step by step?

Direct answer

Plan for 7 stages, in this order: assess honestly whether your record is internationally recognised rather than simply senior or successful domestically.

Order matters here. Several of these steps can't begin until an earlier one is finished, so a sensible sequence is worth more than working harder on any single stage:

  1. 1Assess honestly whether your record is internationally recognised rather than simply senior or successful domestically
  2. 2Identify the target sector your profile best matches and review the current program requirements
  3. 3Assemble the achievement evidence: awards, media, publications, remuneration and peer recognition
  4. 4Obtain reference letters from recognised authorities who can speak to your standing in the field
  5. 5Submit an expression of interest or nomination according to the current process
  6. 6If invited, lodge the visa application with the complete evidence set
  7. 7Complete health and character checks and respond to any request for further information

These are the 5 errors that cost applicants the most time:

  • Mistaking a senior job title for an internationally recognised record of achievement
  • Submitting a list of achievements without a narrative connecting them to Australia's benefit
  • Using referees who cannot speak authoritatively to your standing in the field
  • Overlooking the English requirement and the second instalment charge that follows
  • Assuming program naming and settings are static and relying on outdated information

Treat this as an evidence exercise rather than a paperwork exercise. Every claim needs to be something a case officer can verify, and planning the evidence before you fill in anything is what keeps the process short.

Key points

  • Assess honestly whether your record is internationally recognised rather than simply senior or successful domestically
  • Identify the target sector your profile best matches and review the current program requirements
  • Assemble the achievement evidence: awards, media, publications, remuneration and peer recognition
  • Obtain reference letters from recognised authorities who can speak to your standing in the field

Decision support

National Innovation visa: permanence for internationally recognised talent

The 858 replaced the Global Talent (Independent) program in December 2024. It grants permanent residence from the outset, has no points test and no occupation list, but it requires a nominator and a genuinely distinguished record. This is not a visa you qualify for by accumulating criteria.

Sequence

How a National Innovation application comes together

Most of the work is assembling a record that convinces a decision maker you are internationally recognised, and finding a nominator who will say so credibly.

  1. Honest profile assessment

    1–3 weeksYou

An objective review of whether your record genuinely meets the national innovation threshold. This step saves people years.

  2. Identify a nominator

    1–4 monthsYou

An Australian citizen, permanent resident, eligible New Zealand citizen or Australian organisation with a national reputation in your field.

  3. Assemble the evidence portfolio

    2–5 monthsYou

Awards, publications, patents, senior appointments, remuneration evidence, media coverage and reference letters.

  4. Expression of Interest

    1–2 weeksYou

Submitted through the Department's system for the program.

  5. Invitation and application

    60 days to lodgeYou

Full application with the nominator's form and the complete evidence portfolio.

  6. Health, character and decision

    Several monthsDepartment

Standard checks, then grant of permanent residence.

A weak nominator or a thin portfolio will not be rescued by a well-written submission. The record itself is what is assessed.

Fit test

Being honest about whether this is your visa

An objective assessment at the start is worth more than a year of preparation. This visa rewards an already-established record.

Strong candidates

  • You hold internationally recognised achievements. Major awards, patents, senior roles or sustained outstanding contribution
  • You can identify a credible nominator with a national reputation in your field
  • Your record can be evidenced rather than asserted, with independent documentation
  • You want permanent residence immediately, with no provisional stage or regional condition

A skilled visa will suit better

  • You are a strong professional but not yet internationally recognised in your field
  • You cannot identify a credible nominator
  • Your points score would make you competitive for a 189 or 190. That is a far more predictable route
  • Your achievements are primarily potential rather than a demonstrated record

Failure modes

Where National Innovation applications fail

The most common failure is not a technical defect. It is an application that was never realistically within the threshold.

Record below the international recognition threshold

High impact

Strong domestic or specialist careers often fall short of the nationally significant contribution the program asks for.

Fix: Get an independent, honest assessment before investing in preparation, not after.

Weak or poorly matched nominator

High impact

A nominator without standing in your specific field carries little weight, and can undermine an otherwise good portfolio.

Fix: Choose a nominator whose own reputation is directly relevant to your area of achievement.

Assertions without evidence

High impact

Claims of expertise that are not backed by awards, publications, patents or independent references are discounted.

Fix: Build the portfolio around verifiable, third-party documentation of achievement.

Confusing it with the old Global Talent program

Moderate

The 858 replaced the Global Talent program in December 2024 with different settings. Old guidance is unreliable.

Fix: Work from current criteria and confirm what the present program actually requires.

Overlooking a simpler pathway

Moderate

Applicants fixate on the 858 while sitting on a points score that would secure a 189 or 190 far sooner.

Fix: Assess the skilled routes in parallel. Take the pathway that is most likely to succeed, not the most prestigious.

Evidence

Evidence behind an 858 nomination

There is no points test and no occupation list, so the portfolio is the application. Every claim needs independent, third-party verification.

Evidence behind an 858 nomination
DocumentWhat it has to establishWhat strips it of weight
Nominator's form and profileThat someone with a national reputation in your field supports the application and explains why.A nominator whose standing is in a different field, or who cannot speak to your specific achievements.
Awards and honoursRecognition by independent bodies, which is the clearest evidence of international standing.Internal or employer-issued awards that carry no external weight.
Publications, patents or registered IPOriginal contribution to your field, evidenced in the public record.Claims of contribution with no citations, registrations or verifiable outputs.
Senior role and remuneration evidenceThat your standing is reflected in the positions you hold and what you are paid.Titles without the scope, budgets or reporting lines that substantiate seniority.
Independent reference lettersExpert corroboration that your contribution is significant and recognised internationally.References from colleagues or subordinates rather than independent experts in the field.
Media and third-party coverageExternal recognition beyond your own institution or employer.Public relations material or self-published content presented as independent coverage.
Health and character documentsStandard compliance for you and any included family members.Treating the portfolio as the whole application and neglecting the standard requirements.

Assertions are discounted; verifiable documentation is not. Build the portfolio around what an independent third party can confirm.

The Global Talent (Independent) program was replaced by the National Innovation visa (subclass 858) on 6 December 2024.

No. There is no points test, no occupation list and no skills assessment. Selection turns on the strength of your record and your nominator.

AUD 6,235 for the primary applicant from 1 July 2026, plus AUD 3,120 per adult dependant and AUD 1,560 per child.

Yes. It grants permanent residence from the date of grant, with no provisional stage.

What if I am highly skilled but not internationally recognised?

A points-tested skilled visa (the 189, 190 or 491) is a far more predictable route. Assess both in parallel.

After grant

What permanent residence from day one gives you

The 858 has no provisional stage. Permanent residence, and everything that comes with it, begins on the date of grant.

Live and work anywhere

There is no employer, state or regional condition. You are free to work, start a venture, or change direction entirely.

Medicare and resident entitlements

Medicare enrolment from grant, plus access to resident schemes that temporary visa holders cannot use.

Family is permanent too

Family members included in the application receive permanent residence at the same time, with the same entitlements.

Five-year travel facility

Free travel in and out of Australia for five years from grant, after which a Resident Return Visa is required to re-enter.

Sponsor eligible relatives

As a permanent resident you can sponsor family members, subject to sponsorship rules and the usual bars.

Pathway to citizenship

Citizenship by conferral generally requires four years resident including twelve months as a permanent resident.

There are no ongoing conditions tied to your field of achievement. The visa does not require you to keep working in the area you were recognised for.

Current settings

Where the National Innovation visa stands now

This visa is new. Anyone working from guidance written for the Global Talent program is working from the wrong settings.

The 858 replaced the Global Talent program
From December 2024 the National Innovation visa took the place of the Global Talent (Independent) program, with different criteria and emphasis.
A nominator is required
An Australian individual or organisation with a national reputation in your field must support the application. The nominator's relevance to your field matters.
No points test and no occupation list
Selection turns on the strength of your record rather than on a score or a list, which changes how the application should be built.
Permanent residence from grant
There is no provisional stage, unlike most business and skilled pathways, and no regional or employer condition.
Charges index each 1 July
The primary applicant and dependant charges move with annual indexation.

Get an honest assessment before investing in preparation. The evidentiary bar on international recognition is high and is not something a well-written submission can substitute for.
