English Language Proficiency

You must achieve specified scores in exams like IELTS or PTE for migration purposes. Every authority sets its own language targets to guarantee that incoming applicants can communicate fluently and safely in modern Australian business or healthcare environments.

Documentation

You must provide evidence of your entire background through certified color scans. This includes detailed employment reference letters, official university transcripts, tax registration certificates, and monthly bank statements that clearly prove your past consistent financial earnings.

Skill assessment Australia: the questions that decide your application

A positive skills assessment is often the foundation of a points-tested application. Understand the assessing authority, ANZSCO occupation, qualifications and employment evidence before lodging an Expression of Interest.

What is the Australian skills assessment and who is it designed for?

Direct answer

A skills assessment is an independent evaluation by the authority responsible for your nominated occupation, confirming that your qualifications and employment history meet the Australian standard for that occupation.

Most people arrive at this visa through a search result rather than a migration plan, so it's worth being precise about what it actually does. It suits skilled applicants who need an assessing authority to confirm that their qualifications and experience meet the Australian standard for their nominated occupation.

What the visa is built to do shapes everything that follows: the evidence you'll need, the conditions attached to the grant, where you can live and work, and whether you'll have to apply again later.

The practical result of a grant is this: a formal assessment outcome that either supports your nomination for a points-tested visa or identifies the gaps that need to be addressed before you proceed.

Key points

  • Subclass and permanence: Mandatory step for most points-tested visas / The authority for your nominated occupation
  • Sponsorship position: ACS, Engineers Australia, VETASSESS, TRA, ANMAC, AITSL
  • Outcome: A formal assessment outcome that either supports your nomination for a points-tested visa or identifies the gaps that need to be addressed before you proceed.

What are the eligibility requirements for the Australian skills assessment?

Direct answer

You'll need to nominate an occupation with an ANZSCO code and identify its assessing authority, hold qualifications that meet the authority's standard for that occupation and have relevant employment experience in the occupation, in the form the authority requires.

Every one of these has to be met on its own. There's no averaging out, and a strong result elsewhere won't cover a gate you've missed.

  • Nominate an occupation with an ANZSCO code and identify its assessing authority
  • Hold qualifications that meet the authority's standard for that occupation
  • Have relevant employment experience in the occupation, in the form the authority requires
  • Meet any English, registration or licensing requirement the authority applies
  • Provide verifiable evidence of employment and study, including contactable referees
  • Apply within the authority's specified process and service standards

Engineers Australia, ACS, VETASSESS, TRA, ANMAC and other bodies each apply different criteria and evidence rules. Use the outcome to plan your points score, English strategy, EOI and state or territory nomination options. It is an assessment by the authority responsible for your nominated occupation to confirm that your qualifications and experience meet the relevant Australian standard.

The order matters more than most people expect. A skills assessment and an English result both take months, and neither can be arranged after an invitation arrives - so start with whichever constraint is tightest, because that's the one setting your timeline.

Key points

  • Nominate an occupation with an ANZSCO code and identify its assessing authority
  • Hold qualifications that meet the authority's standard for that occupation
  • Have relevant employment experience in the occupation, in the form the authority requires
  • Meet any English, registration or licensing requirement the authority applies

Which documents and evidence support an Australian skills assessment application?

Direct answer

A complete application typically requires degree certificates, diplomas and full academic transcripts, detailed employment references on company letterhead with duties, dates and hours and payslips, tax records or social security records corroborating employment.

Documentation decides most outcomes, because the case officer can only weigh what's in front of them. The evidence set for this pathway usually includes:

  • Degree certificates, diplomas and full academic transcripts
  • Detailed employment references on company letterhead with duties, dates and hours
  • Payslips, tax records or social security records corroborating employment
  • Position descriptions and organisational charts where the role needs context
  • Professional registration or licensing documents where the occupation requires them
  • English test results where the authority requires them
  • Identity documents and any name change evidence
  • Statutory declarations where original documents cannot be obtained

Map qualifications and work history to the nominated occupation, then prepare clear, consistent and verifiable documents.

Read your file the way a stranger would. If a case officer has to reconcile two spellings of a name, an unexplained gap in employment or a reference that doesn't match the payslip, you'll be asked for more evidence - and that resets part of the assessment clock. Consistency is worth more than sheer quantity.

Key points

  • Degree certificates, diplomas and full academic transcripts
  • Detailed employment references on company letterhead with duties, dates and hours
  • Payslips, tax records or social security records corroborating employment
  • Position descriptions and organisational charts where the role needs context

How much does the Australian skills assessment cost in total?

Direct answer

Skills assessment fees vary widely by authority, commonly falling between AUD 500 and 1,200 for a standard assessment, with higher charges for priority processing, additional occupations, appeals or reviews.

Skills assessment fees vary widely by authority, commonly falling between AUD 500 and 1,200 for a standard assessment, with higher charges for priority processing, additional occupations, appeals or reviews. Some authorities charge separately for document verification, qualification recognition or a skills employment assessment. The cost is usually modest relative to the visa charge, but it is the step most likely to be repeated if it is done poorly, which is where the real expense lies. A negative outcome or a request for further information means additional fees and, more importantly, lost months in an invitation-driven process where timing matters.

Two kinds of cost behave quite differently, and mixing them up is what wrecks most budgets. The government charge is fixed, published and unavoidable, and it moves on the Department's schedule rather than yours. Everything else - assessment, testing, medicals, clearances, translations, professional fees - depends on your circumstances and your choices.

Build the budget line by line rather than from a single headline figure, then add a buffer. A repeated English test, an extra police clearance or a second instalment falling due later are all common. Where a pathway runs in two stages, compare the total across both - a cheaper first step can end up costing more overall.

Charges are indexed and revised, so treat every figure here as a planning guide and confirm the current schedule with the Department of Home Affairs before you pay anything.

Key points

  • Government charges are fixed, published and indexed - confirm the current schedule
  • Supporting costs vary with circumstances and are frequently underestimated
  • Multi-stage pathways should be budgeted in total, not per stage
  • Allow a contingency for repeated tests and additional clearances

How long does the Australian skills assessment take to process, and what affects the timeline?

Direct answer

Assessment timeframes depend on the authority, the completeness of the evidence, and whether the authority needs to verify documents with third parties.

Assessment timeframes depend on the authority, the completeness of the evidence, and whether the authority needs to verify documents with third parties. Straightforward cases with clear qualifications and well-documented employment move at the published service standard. Cases that require document verification with overseas institutions, or where the employment evidence does not clearly demonstrate the required skill level, routinely take longer. Because a skills assessment must be in place before you can lodge a competitive Expression of Interest, it sits on the critical path of any points-tested application and should be started first, not last.

It's worth separating two things that often get confused. Preparation is largely yours to control - gathering evidence, finishing a skills assessment or English test, obtaining clearances, assembling a decision-ready file. Assessment is not: it depends on how many applications sit ahead of yours and what checks your case triggers.

Processing time varies by authority, service level and whether further information is requested. Confirm the current timeframe with the relevant assessing body before planning an invitation strategy.

The encouraging part is that effort spent on preparation pays off during assessment. A complete application with consistent evidence avoids the requests for further information that reset part of that timeline, and time-sensitive documents like medicals and clearances can be sequenced so they're still valid when a decision is made. If the pathway is capped or queued, remember the wait reflects the number of places available, not the quality of your file.

Published times are historical medians rather than promises, so check the Department's current estimate for your subclass before you plan around a date.

Key points

  • Preparation time is controllable; assessment time is not
  • Complete evidence at lodgement is the main lever you hold
  • Time medicals and clearances so they do not expire before decision
  • Capped and queued pathways are driven by planning levels, not workload

How do you apply for the Australian skills assessment step by step?

Direct answer

Applying takes 7 stages, and it starts here: identify the correct ANZSCO occupation code and its assessing authority.

The sequence carries as much weight as the content, because some steps have to be complete before the next is even possible. A workable order looks like this:

  1. 1Identify the correct ANZSCO occupation code and its assessing authority
  2. 2Review the authority's specific criteria for qualifications and employment
  3. 3Request detailed employment references that describe duties, not just job titles
  4. 4Gather certified copies of qualifications and transcripts with translations
  5. 5Lodge the assessment application with the correct fee and service level
  6. 6Respond promptly to any request for further information or document verification
  7. 7Use the positive outcome to support your Expression of Interest and visa application

Most of the avoidable delay traces back to the same 5 mistakes:

  • Choosing the wrong assessing authority or ANZSCO code for the actual role
  • Employment references that list a job title without describing the duties performed
  • Applying for a code whose skill level your qualifications or experience do not support
  • Letting the assessment lapse before an invitation is issued
  • Assuming one assessment can be used for every visa and occupation

This is an evidence-led process, not a form-filling exercise. Each claim needs support a case officer can check, and the cheapest way to get there is to decide what the evidence will be before you start writing anything.

Key points

  • Identify the correct ANZSCO occupation code and its assessing authority
  • Review the authority's specific criteria for qualifications and employment
  • Request detailed employment references that describe duties, not just job titles
  • Gather certified copies of qualifications and transcripts with translations

Skills assessment guidance

Turn your qualifications and employment history into assessment-ready evidence

A skills assessment Australia application asks an assessing authority to compare your qualifications and work history with the nominated occupation. The right occupation code, authority and evidence plan should be decided before documents are submitted.

What is a skills assessment for Australian immigration?

ACS, Engineers Australia, VETASSESS, TRA, ANMAC, AITSL, CPA Australia, CA ANZ, IPA and other bodies each publish their own criteria. A job title alone does not determine the occupation: the duties, qualification level, employment dates, hours, salary and reporting context must support the selected ANZSCO code.

What evidence should you prepare for skill assessment Australia?

Strong evidence is specific and verifiable. Reference letters should describe actual duties rather than copy an occupation description, while payslips, tax records, contracts, organisational charts, transcripts and identity documents help establish the employment history. Certified translations and authority-specific forms should be prepared before lodgement.

How can you avoid delays with skill assessment Australia?

CMG reviews occupation fit, authority selection, document consistency and the link between the assessment outcome and a later 189, 190 or 491 strategy. An assessment outcome does not itself guarantee an invitation or visa, and validity and processing information should be checked with the relevant authority.

What is the practical next step for skill assessment Australia?

It is an authority's evaluation of whether your qualifications and employment history meet the standard for a nominated occupation. A positive outcome may support a skilled migration or other visa application, but you must still meet the separate visa, points, English, health and character criteria.

Practical preparation

Build the evidence before you lodge

Occupation mapping

Compare daily duties with the ANZSCO description and the authority's own occupation guidance before choosing a code.

Authority criteria

Use the correct authority and pathway, including any qualification, professional registration or country-specific evidence rules.

Employment proof

Make dates, hours, salary, duties and employer identity consistent across references and independent records.

Next-step timing

Coordinate the outcome's validity with English testing, EOI planning, nomination and the intended visa pathway.

A skills assessment is not a formality you complete after choosing a visa. Sequence

How an assessment actually runs

The assessment has its own internal sequence. Rushing the first step is what creates the delays people blame on the authority.

  1. Confirm occupation code and authority

Match your duties - not your job title - to an occupation, then confirm the designated assessor for that code.

  2. Gap analysis against the authority's criteria

Fit test

Whether you are ready to be assessed

Assessments fail for predictable reasons. This is an honest read of which side of the line you are on.

Ready to lodge

  • Your qualification is at or above the level the occupation requires, and you have the transcripts to prove it.
  • You have at least the minimum relevant post-qualification employment, and you can evidence it with dated, detailed references.
  • Your duties, described honestly, match the nominated occupation at the right skill level.
  • Your employer will sign a reference that states dates, hours and duties rather than just confirming employment.
  • You have time before your intended EOI date to absorb a request for further information.

Fix this first

  • Your job title matches the occupation but your day-to-day duties sit at a lower skill level.
  • Your employment was gained before the qualification, and the authority requires it to be post-qualification.
  • You cannot obtain employer references because the business closed, or the manager has left and no one will sign.
  • Your qualification is from an unrecognised institution, or you cannot produce transcripts.
  • You are choosing the occupation by which one is easiest, rather than by which one your evidence supports.

Failure modes

Why assessments come back negative

Assessments fail for a small number of repeatable reasons. Each one is avoidable with a proper gap analysis before you pay.

Wrong assessing authority

High impact

The designated authority is set by occupation code. A positive outcome from the wrong body is unusable and the fee is lost.

Fix: Confirm the authority from the current occupation list before paying. Re-check it even if you researched last year.

Duties described too thinly

High impact

Authorities assess duties, not titles. A reference that only confirms employment dates will not evidence skill level.

Fix: Give referees a structured template covering dates, hours, reporting line and specific duties.

Pre-qualification employment claimed

High impact

Most authorities only count employment gained after the relevant qualification. Claiming earlier work inflates your case and undermines it.

Fix: Separate pre- and post-qualification roles in your evidence and only claim what qualifies.

Recognition of prior learning done badly

High impact

RPL and CDR submissions fail when they read like job descriptions rather than evidence of competency against defined criteria.

Fix: Write to the authority's competency standards and demonstrate your own decisions, not the company's achievements.

Assessment expiring before invitation

Moderate

Outcomes have a limited validity. A long invitation wait can outlast the assessment and quietly invalidate your EOI.

Fix: Note the expiry date and plan a re-assessment or fresh application before it lapses.

Inconsistency with the EOI

High impact

If your employment dates or duties differ between the assessment and the EOI, the department will treat the discrepancy as a problem.

Fix: Use one master chronology across the assessment, the EOI and the visa application.

Evidence

What an assessing authority wants to see

Authorities are evidence-driven. These documents do the work, and these are the details that typically sink an otherwise valid claim.

Straight answers

The skills assessment questions behind the searches

Direct answers to the highest-volume assessment queries.

What are the skills assessment requirements for Australia?

A qualification at the required level for your occupation, relevant employment at the required skill level, and - for some occupations - registration or English evidence. Each authority publishes its own detailed criteria.

How much does an Australian skills assessment cost?

Typically between AUD 500 and AUD 1,300 depending on the authority and pathway, plus document procurement and translation. Review and appeal fees are charged separately.

How long does an Australian skills assessment take?

Commonly eight to sixteen weeks from a complete submission. Incomplete applications are the most frequent cause of longer waits.

Which documents do I need for a skills assessment?

Qualification certificates and transcripts, detailed employment references, payment evidence, identity documents and, where relevant, professional registration or a recognition-of-prior-learning report.

Do I need a skills assessment for the 189, 190 or 491?

Yes for the points-tested skilled visas in almost all cases. It must be positive and current before you can be invited on the strength of those points.

Does a skills assessment give me points?

Not directly. It validates your qualification and employment so that the points you claim for them can be counted. The assessment outcome is the evidence; the points come from what it confirms.

How long is a positive skills assessment valid?

Validity is set by the assessing authority and is commonly two to three years. Check the expiry on your own outcome letter rather than assuming a standard period.

What happens if my skills assessment is negative?

Many authorities offer a review or appeal within a strict deadline. Where that is not viable, the realistic options are a different occupation code, a different pathway, or addressing the specific gap the assessor identified.

How long does a skills assessment take?

It varies by authority and by how complete the evidence is. Incomplete applications are the most common cause of delay, so the fastest route is a complete file at lodgement rather than a follow-up request later.

Can I use one assessment for more than one visa?

Often yes. A positive assessment naming an occupation can support an EOI for several subclasses, provided the occupation is on each relevant list and the assessment is still valid.

After grant

Once you have a positive outcome

A positive assessment is a key that unlocks several doors. This is what to do with it.

Lodge or update your EOI

Enter or amend your Expression of Interest so the validated claims are reflected in your point score.

Check the occupation code

Make sure the EOI occupation matches the one the assessment was issued against, exactly.

Diarise the expiry

Set a reminder well before the outcome lapses so an invitation never arrives against an expired assessment.

One assessment, multiple pathways

A valid positive assessment can generally support both state-nominated and regional EOIs, subject to each program's own rules.

Keep the evidence pack

Retain every document you submitted. The visa application will ask for the same evidence again.

Tell your adviser about changes

New employment, a promotion or a new qualification can change your score and should be assessed before you rely on it.

Current settings

What moves in the assessment world

Assessing authorities change criteria, fees and processing arrangements regularly. These are the patterns worth watching.

Authority criteria revisions
Authorities periodically tighten duty-level expectations and redefine which qualifications are considered closely related to an occupation.
Fee and pathway changes
Fees and available pathways, including recognition of prior learning, are revised without notice and usually apply immediately.
Occupation list updates
When the skilled occupation framework changes, the designated assessing authority for some occupations changes with it.
Processing volume swings
Published processing times move sharply with application volumes, so a time quoted months ago may no longer hold.
Digital lodgement requirements
Authorities continue to move towards fully digital submissions with stricter rules on document format and certification.

Always read the authority's own current guidance before lodging. Your adviser should be checking it against your specific occupation code.

Why use an agent here

Why applicants use an agent for this step

The assessment is the single most technical pre-application step, and the one where a mistake is hardest to undo.

The authority choice is a judgement call

Matching duties to an occupation code is not administrative. It is the decision that determines whether the assessment can succeed.

Reference letters get written once

Employers rarely re-issue references. Getting the content right the first time avoids an unfixable evidence gap.

Negative outcomes are time-limited

Review and appeal windows are short. Knowing the deadline in advance changes the outcome.

It feeds every later stage

The same evidence pack supports the EOI and the visa application. Consistency across all three is what case officers test.

Figures move with policy and indexation. A registered agent will confirm each one against the current Department schedule before you commit to a pathway or a payment.
